Substitute Hiring Information

**ATTENTION**

Please apply online if you are interested in becoming a substitute. You will be notified when the next interviews are held. Applications remain in our substitute pool for one (1) year.

Requirements:

Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute for Dorchester County Public Schools.

The requirements for being a substitute are as follows:

  • You must be 18 years of age at time of substitute workshop.
  • You must have a GED or high school degree.
  • You must pass a criminal background check.

Background checks and fingerprinting are conducted in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment within Dorchester County Public Schools.

Our goal of continuously promoting the physical, social, and psychological well-being of our students is accomplished through the initiation of adequate background investigations of all personnel as required by law.

Fingerprint appointments are only available to DCPS new hires or when the Office of Human Resources notifies an individual of the need to reprint due to clarification. If there is a question regarding this process or an issue scheduling an appointment, please contact the Office of Human Resources at 410-228-4747. Effective 1/01/2012, a fee in the amount of $40.00 (non-refundable/non-reimbursable) will apply for fingerprint processing; payable by check or money order ONLY to Dorchester County Public Schools. Fingerprint cards/background checks from other school systems, government offices, or police agencies will not be accepted.

Teacher/Instructional Assistant substitutes must attend the substitute workshop/orientation session before starting work.

Steps to become a Substitute:

  1. Complete the Substitute Application online for a substitute position. www.dcpsmd.org: Job Openings
  2. Your application will remain in the applicant pool for one year from date of submission.
  3. You will be contacted by the HR Office when openings become available.
  4. An interview will be scheduled prior to hiring through the HR Office.
  5. Candidates selected to become substitutes will complete required employment paperwork and background checks.

Substitute Teaching Frequently Asked Questions:

Why do I have to attend an orientation meeting to substitute for a teacher or instructional assistant?

Answer: The orientation meeting provides important information regarding DCPS policies and procedures. Training on the AESOP system is provided as well as an opportunity for the candidate to submit the required paperwork and fingerprints.

I have a bachelor's degree and applied online but have not been invited to a workshop.

Where is the fingerprint appointment and workshop held?

Answer: Fingerprints are done at the DCPS Board of Education, 700 Glasgow St., Cambridge, MD 21613. Workshops are held in the schools and the location is alternated between Cambridge and the North Dorchester area.

What should I bring to the workshop?

Answer: You must bring a valid driver's license; a 2nd form of identification such as a Social Security card, birth certificate, or passport; official and unopened college/university transcript(s); a personal check or cash in the amount of $40.00 for the fingerprint fee; and a voided check for direct deposit enrollment.

What type of substitute can I be?

Answer: You can select substitute assignments by school and/or location, grade level or content area. The school system has programs from Pre-k through high school that require substitute teachers. There are a wide range of subject areas available from English and Math to Carpentry and Cosmetology. When you attend a workshop you will have the opportunity to select the areas you feel most comfortable working with.

What type of training do subs receive?

Answer: Substitutes receive a ½ day of training which covers policies and procedures as well as instruction on using AESOP (Automated Educators Substitute Operator) system. Substitutes also receive a substitute handbook.

Where can I find additional training and resources to better prepare me for the classroom environment?

Answer: Search the website which is devoted to the training and development of substitute teachers. They offer inexpensive online training courses which model common discipline and classroom management scenarios and resolutions. You might also like to participate in their blog for substitute teachers called "The Bus Stop" where you can share ideas and common experiences.

How do I apply for a long-term substitute assignment?

Answer: The principal of the school where the assignment will be located conducts interviews and makes the hiring decision. Human Resources provides the Principal with a list of qualified substitutes. We first consider substitute teachers who hold a valid Maryland teaching certificate in the desired subject area. If we are unable to find a certified substitute we then look at substitutes who hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the subject area.

What do I need to bring as proof of my education?

Answer: A copy of the diploma or transcript for the highest level of education completed. If providing a transcript, please make sure that your name and university name is printed on it as well as the degree received and date completed.

Can I mail my application and I-9 form to DCPS?

Answer: Your application is to be completed online at www.dcpsmd.org and I-9 forms are completed with you in the HR office.

How do I become a long-term substitute teacher?

Answer: All interested parties must have a bachelor's degree or higher.

I am a former DCPS teacher. What do I need to do to become a substitute teacher?

Answer: A Substitute Teacher application must be completed as well as an I-9 form. Fingerprints will need to be submitted as well if they are not already on file or if there has been a period of inactivity of a year or more in employment with DCPS.

Do I get my fingerprints taken at the orientation meeting? Does it cost anything?

Answer: No, you must schedule an appointment with the HR Office (DCPS) (after attending a sub orientation meeting) to submit your fingerprints. There is a $40.00 fee (non-refundable/non-reimbursable) for fingerprint processing (payable by check or payroll deduction only). Fingerprint cards/background checks from other school systems, government or police agencies cannot be accepted. If you have had your fingerprints done in the last 180 days, there is a form you must complete with us in order to use those results.
