SDS Student Wins State Competition

SDS Student Wins State Competition


            Amanda Holotik, a 5th grader at South Dorchester School, won 1st place at the state level of the American Legion Auxiliary’s Annual Americanism Essay Contest, having already won the local and district competitions.  Her essay now goes forward to the national contest.


            Other local category winners from Dorchester County Public Schools in competitions run by the Cambridge and Hurlock posts include:  1st place awards:  Chloe Carpenter (also 2nd place District, NDMS), Savannah Elzey (also 3rd place District, NDMS), Wyatt Harrington (SDS), Isabella Robinson (SDS), and Ronnie Hughes (SDS); 2nd place awards:  Olivia Fischer (SDS), Mace Trippett (NDMS), Matthew Suggs (SDS), Ande Callahan (NDMS), Luke Reinbold (SDS), and Peyton Smith (SDS); 3rd place awards:  Dana Sempoalt-Anaya (SDS), Andrew Dawson (SDS), Addison McClain (SDS), and Kylie Tyson (NDMS).

            According to the American Legion Auxiliary, the purpose of the essay contest is to “encourage participants to learn about the fundamental rights and freedoms we enjoy today.” This year’s topic was “How can we address the health and well-being of our veterans, military, and their families?”
