Chef Charlene Zinnel Named SkillsUSA Region 1 Advisor of the Year

2 June 2020

Chef Charlene Zinnel Named SkillsUSA Region 1 Advisor of the Year

Charlene Zinnel, Culinary Arts instructor at Dorchester Career and Technology Center and staff advisor for the school’s SkillsUSA chapter, has been named Advisor of the Year for SkillsUSA Region 1.  She is now one of five regional finalists across the country competing for the national Advisor of the Year accolade.

SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving around 350,000 students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations and for further education.  The DCTC chapter has about 50 student members and recently earned a Gold Distinction within the SkillsUSA Chapter Excellence program for the third year in a row.

“This is a great honor; however, it is not about me,” said Chef Zinnel.  “This is another opportunity for me to highlight and celebrate Dorchester Career and Technology Center and Career and Technical Education (CTE). As a co-curricular Career and Technical Student Organization, SkillsUSA plays a major part in CTE. Most people know that CTE teaches students technical skills grounded in academics, what they may not know is that the SkillsUSA Framework teaches students equally important personal and workplace skills.”

Kermit Hines, DCTC principal said, “We are very proud and fortunate to have Chef Charlene Zinnel as a member of our faculty.  She is one of the hardest working and most dedicated individuals I know.  She is the life blood of SkillsUSA for DCTC and works very hard to promote the leadership potential SkillsUSA provides for students.”

The national Advisor of the Year is usually announced at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.  However, due to the Covid-19 crisis, the announcement will be made during the online “2020 NLSC Virtual Recognition Session” in late June.

Chef Zinnel is also Dorchester County Public Schools Teacher of the Year 2019-2020.
