Students at North Dorchester Middle School dove into some diverse and challenging topics during their Read Across America event on Monday, March 31, 2025. This event aimed to bring together students, educators, and community members to celebrate the joy of reading while also putting diverse books into the hands of young readers. The event, organized by a dedicated team including Paul Lemle, President of the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA), Katie Cole, President of the Dorchester Educators, Jolene South, Media Specialist at NDMS, and Vaughn Evans, Principal of NDMS, was a resounding success.
This very special event hosted by the incredible Ms. South at North Dorchester Middle School not only celebrated reading, but also strengthened the bonds within the community, highlighting the collective commitment to nurturing the next generation of readers and thinkers. Read Across America, a nationwide initiative that encourages reading and literacy, was embraced with enthusiasm at North Dorchester Middle. The event featured an interactive storytelling session by Mr. Paul Lemle, where he read aloud an excerpt of the book The Attack of the Black Rectangles, which was followed by deep discussion about how books have the ability to transport us to new worlds and open a new realm of possibilities. The library at North Dorchester Middle transformed into a vibrant space filled with the love of literature while encouraging students to explore new ideas through books– it was truly a sight to see!
