October is National Principals Month, and we will be celebrating our extraordinary school leaders and the difference they make every day in their schools and in our community! We begin today with our newest principal, Ms. Myesha Ford, of Maple Elementary School. When asked what she wants most for her students, Ms. Ford says, “I want all my students to feel safe, loved, and valued when coming to school.” Thank you for your leadership of the Maple Lions, Ms. Ford! #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS #ThankAPrincipal

Students from Dorchester Career and Technology Center’s SkillsUSA chapter were recently invited to speak to the Rotary Club about their summer trip to the National Competition in Atlanta. Senior Ta’Tyana Maradiaga and Junior Maddie Tobat shared their experience of the competition, along with general information about the SkillsUSA program. The DCTC Skills teams placed 8th nationally in Health Sciences and 11th nationally in Robotics. The chapter received the USA Model of Excellence Award for the 4th time in six years. Maddie and Ta’Tyana are pictured here with SkillsUSA advisor Chef Charlene Zinnel and Rotary President-Elect Angie Hengst. #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

They may look like an ordinary class, but Mrs. Trumbull’s 5th graders at Maple Elementary are IRONKIDS! So says one of Dorchester County’s recent Ironman Maryland visitors, Mr. B, who received a letter from class member Zoey. Mr. B. replied with notes to Zoey and Mrs. Trumbull, enclosing what is now the “class medal” with a smiling sea nettle (an unofficial symbol of Ironman Maryland) and a gift card for extra classroom supplies. We love the connections this event creates between our kiddos and athletes from throughout the world! #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

The C-SD Class of 2023 has two more graduates as two more students fulfilled their diploma requirements at New Directions Learning Academy. Congratulations to Chanelle Collins and Jermain Ennals, who kept going! Last week, NDLA staff and students had a lunchtime cook-out to celebrate their efforts. Here’s Chanelle, shown with NDLA staff member Ms. Kim Pusha. #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

“Which is your House?” That’s the Big Question as students returned to school earlier this month to discover that the House system has been adopted in every DCPS school. Over the last few weeks, both staff and students have been ‘sorted’ into Houses - smaller, family-like groupings within their school that allow students to become familiar and work side-by-side with children of different ages; offer further opportunities to learn leadership skills; and develop supportive relationships with a wide range of adults. Houses encourage healthy competition, and everyone can win points for their House through sports competitions, academic success, artistic endeavors, attendance, or team spirit – all can contribute, and everyone belongs! Here are some of our DCPS folk celebrating their House! #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

If you notice that a section of Route 16 in Cambridge looks a little better, that’s because students and staff of New Directions Learning Academy have been out, working to keep their little patch of Dorchester County clean and tidy, as part of the Maryland Adopt-A-Highway program. Thanks for your efforts! #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

It's IT Professionals Day! Thank you to the Dorchester County Public Schools IT professionals who largely work behind the scenes but perform all kinds of magic to keep staff and students online all the time! Each of our schools has its own tech wizard – here’s just a few of them, doing their thing. #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

It was a beautiful day in Dorchester County for about 1200 athletes who set out from Gerry Boyle Park this morning to prove that “anything is possible” in Ironman Maryland 2023. Waiting for them at the finish line, 140.6 miles later, were two Dorchester County Public Schools students who had the honor of presenting the first male and female finishers with their medals. The first man to finish was Michael Weiss from Austria, who received his medal from Choptank Elementary 5th grader Ky’Ren Stanley. American Alice Alberts was the first woman across the finish line and received her medal from Choptank Elementary 5th grader Ja’Zyiah Mills. Congratulations to the first place finishers, and the youngsters who put those medals around their necks! There will be athletes on the course tonight until midnight so why not head downtown to cheer them on? #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

Today’s the day! Go, triathletes! And if you’re fast enough to finish first, two Dorchester County Public Schools students will be there to greet you and place that coveted medal around your neck! Ky’Ren Stanley and Ja’Zyiah Mills, both 5th graders in Ms. Travis’ class at Choptank Elementary School, will be waiting for you! Here they are, being cheered on by their classmates yesterday afternoon after finding out their school chose them for this honor! #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

Ironman Maryland is a huge event for our community, and many of our youngsters have great opportunities to be involved. Last night, more than 70 Dorchester County Public Schools kiddos participated in the Welcome Ceremony for the event, as flag bearers carrying the flags representing the home countries of this year’s competitors and as part of the North Dorchester High School Marching Eagles. Have a great race tomorrow, Crabby Nation! #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS

Thank you to those members of our community, led by Ian Nabb, who stuffed over 60 new backpacks with school supplies for our kiddos! Mr. Nabb, a 2005 graduate of C-SD, wanted to celebrate his mother, Mrs. Linda Nabb and her work in our school system. Mrs. Nabb was a member of the Dorchester County Board of Education from 1993 to 2004, serving as president for part of that time. What better way of celebrating dedication to education than helping ensure all our students are equipped to learn? Mr. Nabb is pictured here with DCPS Director of Student Services Mr. Kirk Howie. #AllHandsOnDeckDCPS
