State Testing kicks off next week, and our Maple Lions are ready!
Today, our 3rd–5th graders gathered in the gym during specials for a motivating “Test Talk” with Mrs. Pritchett, our Reading Coach, and Ms. Cook, our Assistant Principal. They highlighted the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, arriving to school on time, and giving it their all! They were even shown some cool prizes they could win for showing up everyday, on time, and doing their best!
Students teamed up with their House groups for a fun round of MCAP: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The winning Houses from each grade level then faced off in a Hoop Shoot Out against the CSD Boys Basketball Team - and believe it or not, our Maple Lions beat the Maryland 1A State Champions!
The energy was electric thanks to the CSD Cheerleaders, who kicked off our MCAP Pep Rally, and our very own Maple Lion Cheerleaders, who closed it out with some spirited cheers to get everyone pumped up.
Adding to the excitement, our younger grade levels created motivational posters for our test-takers. Each class was able to take one with them after the rally — a sweet reminder that all of Maple is cheering them on!
We might be biased, but we truly believe we have the smartest, most hardworking students around. We’re confident they’ll give their best and ROCK the test next week!

Last night, we hosted our annual Math 24 Night at Maple, and it was a fantastic event!
A huge shoutout to all of our amazing Maple Lions who participated — you all did an incredible job!
Special thanks to Ms. Jones for organizing the event and to all the staff members who stayed to help out.
We’re also grateful to Ms. Cathcart, CES Math Coach, and Mr. Abbott, VES Coach, for coming over to support the event.

Ready…Set…Register! Online registration for the 2025-2026 school year for PreK-3 through Kindergarten will open on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
PreK-3 slots are limited and are only offered at Sandy Hill, Maple, Vienna and Hurlock Elementary Schools. PreK-3 students must be 3 years old by September 1, 2025; PreK-4 students must be 4 years old by September 1, 2025; and Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2025. Kindergarten attendance is mandatory by the State of Maryland.
What do you need to register? Proof of age (original birth certificate or passport), proof of residence (lease, mortgage statement, or utility bill), proof of relationship to the student (birth certificate, court order, legal documentation), and up-to-date immunization records.
PreK-3 and PreK-4 students also need proof of income for all adults residing in the household (2024 tax return, 2024 W2’s, current paystubs, and proof of additional income—TCA, child support, unemployment).

Our second graders had an egg-cellent time today during their Math Egg Hunt!
Students solved math problems hidden inside colorful eggs scattered around the playground. It was a fun and active way to practice their skills—and enjoy the spring sunshine! Great job, second grade!
Tomorrow, April 17th, will be a casual dress day for students.
On Friday, Kindergartners in Mrs. Weglarz’s class brought their stuffed animals to school for independent reading time! They earned this special treat by showing great teamwork, listening skills, and following directions for five days in a row.
Tonight was Hit the Books Night at the Shorebirds game, and our Maple families had a blast! If you were there and we missed you, drop your photos in the comments—we’d love to see them!
This week, we held our second Coat Ceremony of the year, honoring students in Grades 3 through 5 who staff believe best exemplify the qualities it takes to ROAR to success as a Maple Lion. The Coat Ceremony is a special tradition we started this year to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional character and leadership. During each ceremony, selected students are presented with a Maple Coat as a symbol of their positive impact in our school community.
Today’s recipients were fourth graders Jaoni Ferguson and Calvin Tsala, whose families were on hand to help celebrate them.
Staff described Calvin as thoughtful, respectful, focused, and genuinely kind to everyone he encounters. He consistently shows responsibility and attentiveness in everything he does.
Staff described Jaoni as always kind and respectful. She consistently listens, follows directions, and gives her best effort, no matter the challenge.
Congratulations to Jaoni and Calvin on earning their Maple Coats!

Today we had our House Meetings and found out that Hippogriff is currently in the lead with the most points! To celebrate, we’ll be wearing blue tomorrow. Students will not have to be in uniform.

Ms. Drake’s second grade class had a blast today using shaving cream as their canvas for learning! Students practiced adding and subtracting within 1,000 using strategies like mental math, base ten blocks, decomposing numbers, and number lines—all while having hands-on fun. The engaging lesson was thoughtfully planned by Ms. Drake’s TAM (Teacher Academy of Maryland) student, Payton, from DCTC. Way to make math exciting and memorable!
