DCPS letterhead

Dear DCPS Families,

As we work to balance our budget for the upcoming fiscal year, we are having to realign our resources and adjust various programs. As such, Dorchester County Public Schools will NOT offer summer school sessions for 2025. This cancellation includes elementary and middle summer school sessions, as well as the high school credit recovery summer program.

It is important to understand that without summer school, students at the middle school and high school levels will not have an opportunity for credit recovery. Students who fail a course will not have the option to make up work or courses this summer. However, there is still time for students to work on improving their grades by the end of the school year to pass and avoid being retained and repeating a grade level.

We want parents to have this information in order to plan accordingly. If your student is failing a course, please reach out to the school to determine what can be done to help your child pass the course prior to the end of the school year so he/she does not risk being retained in the same grade level next year.

Please note that the cancellation of summer school does NOT impact the Extended School Year (ESY) for students receiving special education services per their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This program is federally mandated and will continue as planned. This cancellation also does not impact the Summer Career Enrichment Program (SCEP) being offered in Talbot County as this program is funded from an outside source.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jodi Colman

Assistant Superintendent of Academics and Student Services
