The Parent Encouragement Program (PEP), in partnership with DCPS, is excited to bring an additional resource to support our students' parents/caregivers/guardians. PEP is hosting two family-friendly informational sessions to share insight on parenting styles and support with our DCPS families—one in Cambridge at the Intergenerational Center and the other in Hurlock at North Dorchester Middle School. Dinner will be served, and there will be interactive activities for the children/youth! Please register to join us http://tinyurl.com/PEPinDCMD

Good evening, Vienna Families! This is just a quick and friendly reminder that our students have a goal of reaching 220 steps by Monday morning, January 6, 2025. This weekend is a great opportunity to encourage our students to dive into some reading! Just imagine how proud they will feel when they surpass their reading step goal! Let’s spark their excitement for books, help them read as much as they can, and most importantly, let’s make sure they enjoy every moment! Don’t forget to sign their logs so they can earn credit for all their reading efforts. And if you haven’t already, be sure to check out the reading study—it’s amazing to see the growth in vocabulary our students are achieving through their daily reading! Thank you for your support, and happy reading!

Dear Families, It looks like 2025 is starting with some possible Inclement Weather days. At this time, the forecast is showing a winter storm on Monday, January 6, 2025. DCPS is scheduled to open on time; however, we will monitor the situation closely. Key Points: School Schedule: DCPS is scheduled to open for a normal school day on Monday. Weather Monitoring: If the storm moves in early, we may need to close early or close completely that day. Updates will be provided through the DCPS Thrillshare app, DCPS Facebook page, and DCPS website. Snow Days: DCPS has 3 inclement weather days built into our 2024-2025 school calendar. Maryland law requires us to use all built-in inclement weather days before considering virtual instruction. Virtual Instruction: If the storm results in closures beyond 3 days, we will switch to virtual instruction. Grades 1-12 will log into their devices to connect with teachers online. PK and K students will receive paper copies and can contact teachers for help. Possible Closure Plan: Monday: Possible inclement weather day, no school. Tuesday: Possible inclement weather day, no school. Wednesday: Possible inclement weather day, no school. Thursday: If we are still closed, virtual instruction begins. Device Preparation: Students will bring home their devices on Friday, January 3. If school is open on Monday, they should bring the device back. If closed, keep the device safe, charged, and ready for use if necessary. We aim to be proactive and prepared for inclement weather. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Mrs. Carroll and Mrs. Diffenbach's 1st grade classes at Vienna Elementary School hosted an exciting Polar Express Day! Embracing the day's spirit, Mrs. Carroll dressed as the conductor. Upon arrival, Mrs. Carroll and Mrs. Diffenbach punched the children's tickets, signaling the start of a wonderful experience. The day was enriched with activities such as watching the Polar Express movie, savoring hot chocolate topped with marshmallows, and engaging in fun math exercises with marshmallows for addition and subtraction. Adding to the magic, students received frozen bells delivered from the North Pole! Students also had the opportunity to create reindeer food to sprinkle in their yards at home and learn to assemble gift bags with tissue paper, fostering their creativity in preparing presents for their families. Additionally, they mixed powder and water to create “snow,” which provided a hands-on, sensory experience. Overall, it was a day filled with fun, learning, and holiday spirit!

It’s that wonderful time of year for some festive holiday decorating! We had an exciting holiday door-decorating contest at Vienna Elementary School, and our fantastic staff got into the spirit! The friendly competition wrapped up on December 13th, and voting occurred during our fun Vienna Parents Association Family Night event. The lucky winner received an Amazon gift card, thanks to our fantastic Vienna Parents Association! We're thrilled to announce the winner: ❤️ Mrs. Rebecca Compton, our PreK 3 Instructional Assistant, for her delightful Grinch door. She is an incredibly talented artist! ❤️

Vienna Elementary School had an extra special visitor from the North Pole! Ms. Marcia Spicer, RN, the School Health Program Supervisor from the Dorchester County Health Department, came to visit our PreK3, PreK4, Kindergarten, and 1st-grade students dressed as the cheerful Elf on the Shelf. She read the delightful story "The Elf on the Shelf" and shared important tips about washing our hands and covering our coughs. Ms. Spicer reminded everyone to stay healthy at school and during winter break. She even brought along some glitter sanitizer for all the kids to use and sweet candy canes for everyone to take home! There were no tricks from this friendly elf—thank you so much for the wonderful visit!
